- 1549, from It. lazareto "place set aside for performance of quarantine," originally "house for reception of lepers and diseased poor persons," from Biblical proper name Lazarus (Luke xvi.20), which was extended in medieval usage to "any poor and visibly diseased person" (cf. lazar "one deformed and nauseous with filthy and pestilential diseases" [Johnson]).
